Do You Want More Success In Your Life?
Well, of course you do... who would ever say they want to be a loser?
The REAL question is - how do you measure the success in your life?
There are countless tips and strategies out there, so where do you start?
Where do you focus your time?
Let's look at a couple of examples:
Sir Richard Branson
"Too many people measure how successful they are by how much money they make or the people that they associate with. In my opinion, true success should be measured by how happy you are."
"To live the lives we truly want and deserve, and not just the lives we settle for, we need a Third Metric. A third measure of success that goes beyond the two metrics of money and power, and consist of four pillars: well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving."
"To me, the definition of success is waking up in the morning with a smile on your face, knowing it's going to be a great day. I was happy and felt like I was successful when I was poor, living six guys in a three-bedroom apartment, sleeping on the floor."
And there are thousands of other examples to to go along with these.
The reality is that you will NEVER know the true definition unless you narrow it down to fit you.
Before I started this journey to define success for myself. Why? Because it's impossible focusing on everything that's out there.
But I've been able to create success in my life because I've figured out what truly makes me happy and what makes me enjoy life.
Just look at the examples below....
- Launched 5 blogs (including this one - The Success Code)
- Published a book (Project Management: The Black Experience)
- Launch and sold an app business (as a non-tech founder)
- Launched a non-profit organization
- Speaker for the National Black MBA Association (and other engagements)
- Launch a Podcast (The Success Code Podcast)
Not only was I able to accomplish these things.... MOST IMPORTANTLY I figured out want truly makes me happy.
And that's the message in this blog post today. Your true Measure of Success is whatever you define it to be + whatever makes you happy.
"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." - Maya Angelou
Often times people get so caught in what everyone else is doing, how successful they are, and how they wish they had what they perceive other people have.
But stop and ask yourself.... Do you really want what they have or do what they do?
That is an important question to ask yourself.
Most of the frustration and anxiety that comes with not enjoying your stems from not getting clear on what makes you happy.
I take a pragmatic approach to my life....
Which basically means I've gotten good at understanding which things I do bring me joy and which of those DO NOT.
Those that do not I don't have a problem saying no to. Those that serve me well and congruent with my goals I say yes to.
This allows me to ensure I'm always maximizing the things that will bring me both success and happiness.
Doesn't at all matter to me if anyone else agrees with what I do, it's about my happiness.
So the real question isn't are you successful.... it's whether or not you're doing the things TODAY that makes you happy.
I'm at my happiest moment when I'm creating things for the universe and hearing stories of other people's happiness.
But I'm not a mental health specialist. I'm a passionate creator.... an author... I'm a non-tech founder...
I like focusing on what makes me happy and that's creating my own success and helping others do the same.
